Double Dart Cookie

DoubleClick DART Cookie

What does the DoubleClick cookie do on my computer?

A DoubleClick cookie found in your Cookies folder is likely a DART cookie. This cookie is utilized by marketers to understand the effectiveness of their Internet advertising campaigns and paid search listings. Numerous marketers and websites on the Internet employ DoubleClick’s DART technology to distribute and manage their advertisements or oversee their paid search listings. When an ad is shown or a paid listing is selected, DoubleClick’s DART products create or identify a unique, persistent cookie. The data provided by the DART cookie assists marketers in determining how many unique users viewed their ads, the number of users who clicked their Internet advertisements or paid listings, and which specific ads or listings received clicks.

Why does this cookie reappear after I delete it?

Every time you access a website or search engine that utilizes DoubleClick’s DART technology, our servers will check for the presence of a DART cookie on your device. If no DART cookie is detected, the servers will attempt to set a new cookie in response to your browser’s request to view that webpage. If you’d prefer not to receive a DART cookie with a unique value, you can acquire a DoubleClick DART “opt-out” cookie. Alternatively, you have the option to modify your Internet browser’s settings regarding cookie handling. Further details on this are explained in the following question.

How can I modify my cookie settings to either accept or decline cookies?

To remove cookies you may have previously accepted and to deny or limit future cookies, follow one of these methods:

IMPORTANT: DELETING YOUR OPT-OUT COOKIE REQUIRES YOU TO OPT-OUT AGAIN. IF YOUR BROWSER BLOCKS ALL OR THIRD-PARTY COOKIES, OPT-OUT COOKIES WILL ALSO BE BLOCKED.

* For Internet Explorer 6.0 users, navigate to the Tools menu, then to Internet Options, and proceed to the Privacy tab. This version of IE is the first to employ P3P to differentiate between cookie types. P3P utilizes standardized privacy statements from cookie issuers to control your cookie acceptance. Within the “Privacy” tab, click on the “Advanced” button. Select “Override automatic cookie handling” and specify whether you’d like to accept, block, or be prompted for “First-party” and “Third-party Cookies.” To block all cookies from the doubleclick.net domain, access the “Web Sites” section under the “Privacy” tab and click the “Edit” button. Type “doubleclick.net” in the “Address of Web site” field, select “Block,” click OK (the menu will disappear); click OK again to return to the browser.

* For users of Netscape 6.0+, select “Edit” from the menu bar, choose “Preferences,” click on “Advanced,” and locate the “Cookies” section. Choose either “Warn me before accepting a cookie” or “Disable cookies” and click “OK.” Next, click the “Start” button, select “Find,” choose “Files and Folders,” enter “cookies.txt” in the search box, and click “Find Now.” Once search results show up, drag all listed files to the “Recycle Bin.” Finally, shut down and restart your Netscape browser. Depending on your prior choice, you will either be prompted by new cookie sets or no cookies will be set or received. If you’re using Mozilla or Safari, please refer to their websites for instructions on disabling cookies in those programs.
