What is Bow Wow’s Net Worth?
With a net worth of $1.5 million, Bow Wow is an American rapper and actor. He made a significant impact in the music industry following the release of his debut album at just 13 years old, under the name “Lil’ Bow Wow.” After achieving musical success, Bow Wow expanded his career into acting.
Legal and Financial Issues
In July 2011, Bow Wow confirmed he had a daughter named Shai with his ex-girlfriend after previously denying the claims. During an October 2012 court hearing related to child support for Shai, he informed the judge that his monthly income was only $4,000 and that he had a mere $1,500 in his checking account. Consequently, he was mandated to pay $11,500 in back child support and $3,000 monthly thereafter.
Additionally, a year prior, TMZ reported that Bow Wow had a tax debt exceeding $90,000 to the IRS. They also disclosed that he had experienced repossession of both a $200,000 Bentley and a $220,000 Ferrari by various creditors over the years, and still owed $280,000 to a luxury car leasing firm.
Early Life
Shad Gregory Moss, known as Bow Wow, was born in Columbus, Ohio, on March 9, 1987. By age six, he began crafting his own raps under the moniker “Kid Gangsta.” Influencers of his early years included groups such as N.W.A. During this period, Bow Wow was afforded the opportunity to perform on stage in Los Angeles, where Snoop Dogg, in attendance that day, recognized his talent. After the show, Snoop Dogg met him and nicknamed him “Lil’ Bow Wow,” a name that would become iconic.
Career
At that time, Snoop Dogg had yet to release his debut album and invited Lil’ Bow Wow to feature on one of his tracks. Snoop’s album, “Doggystyle,” was launched in late 1993, featuring Lil’ Bow Wow on the track “Gz and Hustlas,” marking his initial foray into professional music. He gained further recognition later that year by appearing on “The Arsenio Hall Show.”
Five years later, he encountered Jermaine Dupri, a producer deeply invested in developing the 11-year-old rapper’s career. After contributing a track to the “Wild Wild West” soundtrack in 1999, Lil’ Bow Wow was primed to drop his debut album, “Beware of the Dog,” when he turned 13 in 2000. This album included hits like “Bounce With Me” and “Bow Wow,” the latter featuring Snoop Dogg and topping the rap charts, fortifying their collaboration. The album was a remarkable success, selling over 2 million copies within a year and ultimately achieving over 3 million total sales to earn platinum certification.
In 2002, Lil’ Bow Wow made two pivotal changes: he rebranded himself as “Bow Wow” and launched his second album, “Doggy Bag.” In an explanation for his name change, Bow Wow cited the saturation of the “Lil” prefix among rappers and expressed his desire to reflect his maturity. “Doggy Bag” also performed well, reaching number eleven on the Billboard Top 200 and earning another platinum certification. Tracks such as “Take Ya Home” were featured on the album, and “Basketball,” part of the “Like Mike” soundtrack, stood out as another significant release from Bow Wow that year.

“Unleashed,” released by Bow Wow in 2003, included collaborations with artists like Birdman, Mario, and Amerie. Although the album garnered mixed reviews, it achieved a peak position of number three on the Billboard Top 200 and sold 129,000 copies in its first week. Following this, Bow Wow launched “Wanted” in 2005, featuring a collaboration with Omarion. Similar to “Unleashed,” this album also debuted at number three on the Billboard Top 200, with first-week sales reaching 120,000 units. In 2006, “The Price of Fame” was introduced, showcasing features from Chris Brown and T-Pain. This album debuted at number six on the Billboard Top 200 and recorded impressive first-week sales of 262,000 copies.
After teaming up with Omarion for a collaborative album in 2007, Bow Wow released “New Jack City II” in 2009. This marked the first album by Bow Wow to carry a parental advisory sticker, as it tackled themes like drug use. That same year, he signed with Cash Money Records, which turned out to be a crucial period for him—at least regarding his musical career. Over the subsequent years, despite featuring on various other artists’ tracks and releasing mixtapes, he consistently announced and then postponed his next album, which ultimately never materialized. Eventually, Bow Wow reverted to using his real name, Shad Moss, and departed from Cash Money Records without releasing an album under their label.
Later on, after signing with Bad Boy Records, the label owned by P. Diddy, he revealed plans to retire from rap following the release of one final album called “NYLTH.” However, as of May 2023, fans expressed disappointment, noting that the album had yet to see the light of day. Nonetheless, in 2016, Shad Moss did collaborate with Soulja Boy on a mixtape.

Acting/Hosting Career
Bow Wow cited a growing focus on his acting and hosting career as a key reason for his withdrawal from music. His acting journey began early in his music career, highlighted by his debut in 2002’s “Like Mike.” A standout role for him was in “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.” He has appeared in several television shows, including “Smallville” and “Entourage,” and returned to his role as Twinkie in the 2021 film “F9.”
Additionally, Bow Wow has had a considerable career as a television personality and host. He took on the hosting role for BET’s “106 and Park” in 2013, though the show was canceled in 2014. In 2016, he began hosting “RnB Friday Nights,” an Australian show.
Personal Life
Bow Wow was previously engaged to Erica Mena and is the father of a daughter named Shai Moss, born to Joie Chavis. He currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia, with his mother.
