Early Life

Susan Magdalane Boyle was born on April 1, 1961, in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland. Her father, Patrick, a WWII veteran, worked as a miner, while her mother, Bridget, served as a shorthand typist. Occasionally, her father sang at a venue called the Bishop’s Blaize. As the youngest of nine children, she has four brothers and four sisters. Throughout her childhood, she faced bullying and was raised under the belief that a difficult birth had deprived her of oxygen, which supposedly caused a learning disability. Later in life, she discovered that she was misdiagnosed and actually has Asperger syndrome and an “above average” IQ. Although she struggled in school and had limited qualifications, she did take singing lessons from vocal coach Fred O’Neil and attended Edinburgh Acting School.

Career

In 1998, Boyle spent her personal savings on a professionally produced demo, which she sent to record companies, radio talent contests, and various TV programs. The demo showcased her singing “Cry Me a River,” “Killing Me Softly,” and “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.” Following her audition for “Britain’s Got Talent,” these songs found their way online. Additionally, after her first appearance on the show, other early recordings, including her rendition of “Cry Me a River” on the CD “Music for a Millennium Celebration, Sounds of West Lothian,” released in 1999, also surfaced on the internet.

After winning several singing competitions, Boyle’s mother encouraged her to try out for the televised talent show “Britain’s Got Talent.” Although she had previously given up the opportunity to audition for “The X Factor,” believing that appearance determined who advanced, she nearly did the same with “Britain’s Got Talent.” However, her former singing coach, O’Neil, persuaded her to proceed.
